The Bible's Teaching on Drinking Alcohol

The Bible speaks about drinking alcohol in various ways, neither explicitly forbidding nor commanding it. In some passages, wine and strong drink are described as blessings from God (Rom 14:14; Col 2:20-23; 1 Tim 4:1-5). However, other passages warn of the dangers of excessive drinking and drunkenness, labeling it as a mocker and a brawler (Prov 20:1; Mt 11:19; Lk 7:34). The New Testament also associates drunkenness with other sinful behaviors, such as sexual immorality, thievery, greed, and selfish ambition (1 Cor 5:11; 6:9-10; Gal 5:19-21).

The Role of Self-Control and Wisdom

The Bible emphasizes the importance of self-control and wisdom in relation to drinking alcohol. In Proverbs 20:1, it is written that wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise. The apostle Paul also warns against getting drunk with wine, advising instead to be filled with the Spirit (Eph 5:18). This passage suggests that Christians should not let their behavior be controlled by their desires, but rather seek to live a life that is guided by the Holy Spirit.

The Christian's Freedom and Responsibility

As Christians, we have the freedom to choose how we live our lives, including our decisions about drinking alcohol. However, with this freedom comes the responsibility to exercise self-control and wisdom. We are not to use our freedom as an excuse to indulge in sinful behaviors, including excessive drinking. Rather, we are to live our lives in a way that honors God and reflects our relationship with Him. As the apostle Paul writes, "For you, brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love" (Gal 5:13). This principle can be applied to our decisions about drinking alcohol, as we seek to live a life that is pleasing to God and reflects our commitment to Him.
