Should Christians fear God?

The question of whether Christians should fear God may seem counterintuitive at first glance. After all, we are told in Scripture that our victory is secure in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and that we are co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17; 1 Corinthians 6:3). However, this does not mean that we should not fear God. In fact, the Bible teaches that we should fear God. Job says, "He who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty" (Job 6:14). The Psalms also emphasize the importance of fearing God, saying that it is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7). When we fear God, we are not fearing a distant or uncaring deity, but rather a loving and powerful God who is worthy of our reverence and respect.

The fear of God is not just an intellectual understanding, but a response of our entire being. When God teaches us to fear him, he usually does it in a way that is utterly astonishing. The Bible teaches that we should fear God's power and authority, which extends beyond death and includes the ability to cast into hell (Luke 12:5). We should also fear God's wrath, but as Christians, we should not fear it as a source of punishment, but rather as a reminder of our salvation. We were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind (Ephesians 2:3), but we have trusted in Jesus Christ and have been redeemed from our sinful nature. The fear of God's wrath is a reminder of our dependence on God and our need for His mercy and grace.

In contrast, Christians should not fear Satan, because they can call upon Jesus Christ, who defeated Satan on the Cross and wields all of the authority of heaven and earth. After Jesus' resurrection from the dead, He demonstrated His power over sin and death, and gave us the authority to overcome Satan and his kingdom (1 Corinthians 15:55-57). Therefore, we should not fear God's power and authority, but rather reverence and respect Him, and live our lives in a way that reflects our dependence on Him. By fearing God, we can experience a deeper understanding of His character and a greater sense of awe and wonder at His power and majesty. This fear will motivate us to live a life that is pleasing to Him, and to spread the message of the Gospel to a world that desperately needs it.
