The Biblical Perspective on Drinking

From a biblical perspective, drinking is not inherently wrong. In fact, the Bible mentions drinking wine and other fermented beverages on several occasions. However, it is clear that the Bible warns against excessive drinking. In Proverbs 23:29-35, the Bible says, "Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger over wine, those who go heavy with wine, are not wise." (ESV) The Bible is warning against the dangers of excessive drinking, not against drinking altogether.

What Constitutes Excessive Drinking?

Excessive drinking is not just about the amount of alcohol consumed, but also about the consequences of that drinking. If a person's drinking is causing problems in their life, such as relationship issues, job problems, or health concerns, then it is likely excessive drinking. Other signs of excessive drinking include blackouts, drunk driving, and consistent morning drinking. If a person is drinking to the point where they are losing control, or if they are using drinking as a way to escape problems, then it is likely excessive drinking.

The Consequences of Excessive Drinking

The consequences of excessive drinking can be severe and long-lasting. In Proverbs 23:29-35, the Bible says, "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's." (ESV) The Bible is warning against the dangers of excessive drinking, not just because of its physical consequences, but also because of its spiritual consequences. Excessive drinking can lead to a loss of self-control, and can even lead to idolatry, where the person is worshipping another god besides God. Ultimately, the Bible is calling us to live a life of moderation and self-control, and to avoid excessive drinking.
