Can our daily routines bring joy?

Our daily routines can indeed bring joy when we approach them with a biblical perspective. The Bible teaches us that joy is a gift from God, and that it is available to us in all aspects of life (1 Tim. 6:17). This means that we can experience joy not just in grand, extraordinary moments, but also in the everyday, mundane tasks of life. For example, Jesus practiced sleep as a way of connecting with his Father and recharging for ministry (Mark 4:38-41). Similarly, we can find joy in the simple acts of feasting, gratitude, celebration, worship, and solitude, as well as in activities like fasting and serving.

As we practice these disciplines over time, they can become joyful experiences for us. This is because joy is not just an emotional feeling, but also a state of being that is rooted in our relationship with God. When we obey God and live according to his will, we experience joy (Ps. 119:111). Conversely, when we disobey God, we can experience joylessness and even depression (Ps. 37:4). Therefore, our daily routines can bring joy when we align them with God's will and priorities. By making time for worship, gratitude, and service, we can cultivate a sense of joy that is not dependent on external circumstances, but rather on our relationship with God.

Ultimately, our daily routines can bring joy when we learn to see them as opportunities to participate in God's joy. As the Bible says, "You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent" (Ps. 30:11-12). When we approach our daily routines with this mindset, we can experience joy in the midst of even the most mundane tasks. By practicing disciplines like gratitude, worship, and service, we can cultivate a sense of joy that is rooted in our relationship with God and that can bring us joy even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
