The Misconception of a Loving God

The question of how a loving God could send people to hell is a misconception that has been debated by many. The idea that a loving God would not send anyone to hell is based on a misunderstanding of God's nature and character. The Bible clearly states that God desires the salvation of every human being, and that He is the Savior of all people (Isaiah 45:22). This is evident in the fact that God literally pleads with people to turn back from their self-destructive course of action and be saved, as seen through the prophet Ezekiel.

God's Sovereignty and Human Choice

However, the Bible also teaches that God does not force people to accept Him, and that human choice plays a role in salvation. The Bible says that God gives to all men the desire to be saved, but not everyone responds to this desire (Romans 10:21). It is not that God does not love those who go to hell, but rather that He does not give them the desire to be saved. This is evident in the fact that Jesus said, "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him" (John 6:44). This means that God's sovereignty and human choice are both involved in salvation, and that not everyone will choose to accept Him.

The Reality of Hell

The reality of hell is a consequence of humanity's rebellion against God, and it is not a punishment that God desires to inflict on anyone. However, it is a necessary consequence of sin, and it is a reality that God will not change (Matthew 25:41). The Bible teaches that hell is a place of eternal punishment, where the wicked will be punished for their sins (Revelation 20:15). This is a sobering reality, and it should motivate us to turn to God and accept His salvation, rather than trying to earn our way to heaven through good works. As C.S. Lewis said, "The idea that God would send anyone to hell is a mere corollary from God's goodness" (Mere Christianity, 52). In other words, God's goodness is not the reason why some people go to hell, but rather the fact that they have rejected His salvation.
