The Bible's Teachings on Social Drinking

The Bible does not explicitly forbid drinking alcoholic beverages, but it warns against excessive drinking and the dangers of intoxication. In Romans 14:13, 15:1, and 1 Corinthians 8:1, 9-13, the Bible teaches that Christians should not do anything that might cause their brothers or sisters to stumble or become a hazard to their growth and success as Christians. This means that if a Christian's drinking might cause others to become drunk or to engage in sinful behavior, they should refrain from drinking in their presence. On the other hand, the Bible also teaches that all believers share the great spiritual privilege of coming near to God and that they should not restrict their own freedom in Christ in order to avoid causing others to stumble.

Jesus' Example and the Early Church

Jesus' own example does not suggest total abstinence from alcohol. He made fine wine from water at a wedding feast (John 2:1-10), and he was called a glutton and a drunkard by the Pharisees (Luke 7:34). The early Christian church also drank wine as a gift from God (1 Timothy 5:23). However, the Bible does condemn acts of drunkenness vigorously, and it warns against the use of alcohol as a beverage (Proverbs 20:1; 23:29-35).

Christian Freedom and Responsibility

As Christians, we have the freedom to drink or not to drink, but we should not use our freedom to cause others to stumble or to engage in sinful behavior. We should also be mindful of the potential dangers of excessive drinking and the example we set for others. Ultimately, our goal as Christians is to know God, serve him, fear him, and love him, and to walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). We should not rely on strategies that are not Christ-centered, but rather seek to live a life that reflects our faith in Jesus Christ. In this sense, social drinking is not necessarily wrong, but it requires careful consideration and a commitment to living a life that honors God.
