The Challenge of Affordability

When we say we can't afford groceries, we may be thinking about the financial constraints of buying food, but we are not thinking about the spiritual implications of our priorities. The Bible says, "Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price" (Isaiah 55:1). This verse is not suggesting that we can buy food without paying for it, but rather that we can have spiritual nourishment without cost. Jesus Christ is the bread that satisfies our hunger and gives us eternal life. However, many of us are spending our money on things that do not truly satisfy us, such as junk food or material possessions.

The issue of affordability is not just about money; it's about our priorities. When we say we can't afford to give to God, we may be saying that we can't afford to live a life that reflects Christian values. We may be saying that we can't afford to prioritize our spiritual well-being over our physical desires. But the Bible says, "Few think they can afford" to live a life that is pleasing to God (Psalm 50:14). However, we can scarcely afford not to. God's command to rest on the seventh day is not just a physical necessity; it's also a spiritual one. We need to learn to cease from our work, our producing, and our participating in the economy, and instead, seek spiritual nourishment.

The Bible teaches us that true wealth is not measured by our financial resources, but by our relationship with God. Jesus Christ, who was rich, became poor so that we might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). This is the nature of God's economy. When we prioritize our spiritual well-being, we will find that we have more than enough to meet our physical needs. We will learn to trust in God's provision and to live a life that is pleasing to Him.
