Should Christians drink alcohol?

The Bible does not explicitly forbid drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, the Bible presents a mixed view of alcohol. On one hand, it is seen as a blessing from God (Rom 14:14; Col 2:20-23; 1 Tim 4:1-5; cf. Mk 7:15). On the other hand, it can be a potential danger (Proverbs 23:29-35; Ephesians 5:18). The apostle Paul warned that believers should not drink to excess (1 Cor 6:9).

The Bible does speak against drunkenness vigorously (Proverbs 23:29-35; Ephesians 5:18). It also warns against the use of alcohol as a beverage, calling it a mocker and a brawler (Proverbs 20:1). The apostle Paul also warned that believers should not become a stumbling block to others by drinking in their presence (Rom 14:13; 1 Corinthians 8:1, 9-13; 10:23). However, this does not mean that Christians should never drink. Jesus made fine wine from water (Jn 2:1-10), and he was called a glutton and a drunkard (Lk 7:34). This suggests that moderate drinking is acceptable.

Ultimately, the decision to drink or not to drink is a matter of personal conviction. Christians should use their freedom in Christ to make choices that honor God. However, they should also be mindful of the potential dangers of alcohol and avoid drinking to excess. Christians should also be aware of the impact of their actions on others and avoid becoming a stumbling block to their brothers and sisters in Christ. The key is to use self-control and to prioritize a relationship with God above all else. As the Bible says, "Do not be mastered by anything" (1 Corinthians 6:12).
