The Biblical View of Alcoholism

The Bible speaks about drunkenness and the dangers of excessive drinking, but it does not explicitly forbid drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, wine and strong drink are referred to as blessings from God in some passages (Rom 14:14; Col 2:20-23; 1 Tim 4:1-5). However, the Bible warns of the dangers of excessive drinking, describing it as a mocker, a brawler, and a source of foolishness (Proverbs 20:1). The New Testament continues this teaching, stating that a pattern of drunkenness is no different than other sinful behaviors such as sexual immorality, thievery, and greed (1 Cor 5:11; 6:9-10; Gal 5:19-21).

The Nature of Alcoholism

The Bible views drunkenness as a sin, never a sickness. Scripture is clear in its teaching that drunkenness is against God and His law. The Bible does not treat addiction as a disease, but rather as a pattern of behavior that must be addressed through spiritual means. Christians who struggle with alcoholism are called to repent and seek help, but they must also learn to walk in the Spirit and develop new habits (Gal 5:22). The Bible encourages believers to be sober-minded and to avoid excessive drinking, not because it is inherently sinful, but because it can lead to a lack of self-control and foolishness.

The Christian Response to Alcoholism

Believers who struggle with alcoholism must learn to be content in all circumstances and to trust in God's sovereignty over their lives (Phil 4:11-13). The Bible encourages believers to pray for sobriety and to seek the help of others in their struggle with addiction. Ultimately, the Christian response to alcoholism must be one of repentance, self-control, and trust in God's power to overcome sin.
