How do we find joy in the simple things in life when we're feeling stressed?
The Christian's Guide to Finding Joy in the Simple Things in Life
As Christians, we are called to find joy in all things, even in the midst of stress and adversity. But how do we do this? The Bible teaches us that joy comes from God, and that He is the One who provides us with everything for our enjoyment (1 Tim. 6:17). This means that we can find joy in the simple things in life, like eating, drinking, and working (Eccles. 5:18-20). However, it's easy to get caught up in striving, desiring, and becoming deeply attached to things that can ultimately lead to disappointment and sorrow.
To find joy in the simple things, we must be willing to look for it. We must be willing to welcome joy rather than feeling like we are betraying our stress or depression by looking for it. As the Bible says, "You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have removed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!" (Psalm 30:11-12). This means that we can choose to see the good in every situation, no matter how difficult it may seem. We can choose to find joy in the little things, like a beautiful sunset, a good cup of coffee, or a kind word from a friend.
But what about when stress and depression feel overwhelming? How can we find joy in the midst of darkness? The answer is that joy is not the opposite of depression. It is deeper than depression. Therefore, we can experience both. Depression is like the relentless rain, but joy is like the rock that stands firm in the midst of the storm. We can stand on joy, even when depression feels like it's raining all around us. As the Bible says, "You have given me the head knowledge of Your ways, and I have learned Your paths. In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore." (Psalm 16:11-12). This means that we can find joy in the presence of God, even in the midst of stress and adversity. We can find joy in the simple things, and we can find joy in the midst of darkness. We just need to be willing to look for it.
