Is it a sin to get drunk?

The Bible consistently teaches that drunkenness is a sin. In the book of Proverbs, it is said that "Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise" (Proverbs 20:1). In 1 Corinthians 6:10, it is written that "drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of God." This is not because getting drunk is just a matter of personal choice, but because it is a manifestation of a deeper spiritual issue. As the Bible says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked" (Jeremiah 17:9).

The distinction between sin and sickness is an important one. While some may view drunkenness as a disease or an illness, the Bible consistently teaches that it is a sin. This is not to say that people who struggle with addiction are not sick or that their struggles are not real. However, the root cause of their struggles is not a physical or medical issue, but a spiritual one. As the Bible says, "Sin is the root, and all other things are the branches" (Matthew 7:17-18). To deal with drunkenness, therefore, we must address the underlying spiritual issues that are driving it.

It is also worth noting that drunkenness is not just a personal issue, but a societal one. It can lead to a range of negative consequences, including impaired judgment, reckless behavior, and harm to oneself and others. As the Bible says, "The drunkard will not inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Corinthians 6:10). This is not just a matter of personal morality, but of our relationship with God. By getting drunk, we are not just harming ourselves, but also our relationships with others and our relationship with God. Therefore, it is a sin to get drunk.
