Why Did I Have to Lose My Limb?

As an evangelical Christian, I believe that God is sovereign over all creation and that He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good. When we suffer physical or emotional pain, we may wonder why God allowed it to happen. In the Bible, Jesus teaches us to consider the value of our physical bodies in relation to our eternal souls. In Matthew 18:6-9, Jesus says, "If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have your whole body thrown into hell." This passage is often misunderstood as encouraging self-mutilation, but rather it emphasizes the importance of prioritizing our spiritual well-being over our physical comfort.

The Purpose of Pain

Pain is a natural consequence of the fallen world we live in. As Christians, we must recognize that our physical bodies are not the ultimate reality, but rather a temporary vessel for our eternal souls. When we suffer pain or injury, we have the opportunity to reflect on our priorities and values. We may wonder if our physical comfort is more important than our spiritual well-being. The Bible teaches us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and as such, they are subject to the will of God. When we experience pain or injury, we can trust that God is working in our lives to refine us and prepare us for eternity.

Finding Comfort in Suffering

While it may be difficult to understand why we experience pain or injury, we can find comfort in knowing that God is sovereign and that He has a plan for our lives. In Romans 8:28, the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." This verse reminds us that even in the midst of suffering, God is working to bring good out of it. As we navigate our physical and emotional pain, we can trust that God is with us and that He will ultimately redeem us and give us eternal life through Jesus Christ.
