Biblical Answer

Fear of death is a natural human emotion, but for Christians, it should not be the primary concern. The Bible teaches that Christians need not fear death because their victory is secure in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are co-heirs with Christ and will judge the angels (Romans 8:17; 1 Corinthians 6:3). Jesus instructs us to fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell, not those who can only kill the body (Matthew 10:28). This fear is not that we will be damned, but that Jesus Christ will be defeated.

The fear of death is often connected to the fear of the unknown, such as the way we will die or the pain we may experience. However, the Bible teaches that death has lost its sting (1 Corinthians 15:55-57) since Jesus is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:20). We will be raised in Christ, and our eternal home is with Him. While death retains its horror, we should not fear it because our salvation is secure in Jesus Christ.

The fear of death should be replaced with a fear of God, who is the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. This fear is a healthy and mature fear that acknowledges the holiness and power of God. It is not a fear of being punished or damned, but a fear of disappointing God and failing to live a life that reflects His values and teachings. By fearing God, we can live a life that is pleasing to Him and find comfort in His presence, even in the face of death.
