The Biblical View of Hell

The Bible presents a stark view of human sinfulness, emphasizing the reality of evil and the need for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. The concept of hell is not just a place for "really terrible people" like Hitler and Stalin, but rather a destination for those who reject God's offer of salvation. The Bible teaches that hell is a place of eternal punishment, where those who have rejected God's love and mercy will suffer for eternity (Matthew 25:41, 46; Revelation 20:15).

The Nature of Human Evil

Human beings are not inherently good, but rather sinful and rebellious towards God. Our natural tendency is to reject God's love and to pursue our own selfish desires, leading to a life of sin and rebellion. This is evident in the Bible's description of human nature as "corrupt" and "depraved" (Romans 3:10-18; Ephesians 2:1-3). As a result, we are all deserving of God's judgment and condemnation, and would face eternal punishment in hell if not for God's offer of salvation through Jesus Christ.

The Love of God and the Reality of Hell

Some may struggle with the concept of hell, feeling that it is incompatible with God's love and goodness. However, the Bible teaches that God's love is not a sentimental or emotional feeling, but rather a deep and abiding commitment to His people. God's desire is that all people would come to know Him and be saved, but He also cannot compromise His justice and allow sin and rebellion to go unpunished. As C.S. Lewis noted, "Hell is not a place where God sends people, but a place where God leaves people to themselves, as they have chosen." In this sense, hell is not a punishment that God delights in, but rather a consequence of humanity's rejection of His love and offer of salvation.
