Does the Old Testament forbid premarital sex?

The Old Testament does not explicitly forbid premarital sex. The Bible does not speak to this particular issue, as young people were married much earlier and reached sexual maturity later than today. However, the Bible does emphasize the importance of marriage and the marital bond. In biblical terms, a man leaves his father and mother, cleaves or binds himself to his wife, and then the two become sexually united as one flesh (Genesis 2:24).
