Finding Joy in the Simple Things in Life

When we're feeling stuck, it can be challenging to find joy in the simple things in life. We may feel like we're missing out on something greater or that our current circumstances are not worthy of joy. However, as the Bible teaches, joy is not the opposite of depression, but rather a deeper and more abiding reality. Joy is like a rock that stands firm even in the midst of relentless rain (depression). It's not something that we can use up or turn away from, but rather it grows and increases over time as we cultivate it.

The Source of Joy

The key to finding joy in the simple things in life is to recognize that joy comes from God. When we understand that God is the source of all good things and that He richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment, we are freed to take joy in the things He has blessed. This includes simple things like eating, drinking, and working. As the Bible says, "And he said to them, 'Take heed, and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions'" (Luke 12:15). In other words, our joy is not found in accumulating wealth or material possessions, but rather in the simple pleasures of life that God has given us.

Practicing Joy

So, how can we practice joy in the simple things in life? First, we must be willing to look for it and welcome it into our lives. This means being intentional about finding joy in the midst of difficult circumstances. We can do this by focusing on the good things that God has given us, no matter how small they may seem. We can also cultivate joy by spending time with others, engaging in activities that bring us joy, and practicing gratitude. As the Bible says, "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever!" (Psalm 107:1). By practicing joy in the simple things in life, we can experience a deeper and more abiding sense of joy that will sustain us even in the midst of difficult times.
