The Power of Joy in the Midst of Suffering

Joy is not the opposite of depression; it is deeper than depression. Therefore, you can experience both. Depression is the relentless rain, but joy is the rock. Whether depression is present or not, you can stand on joy. Joy takes our attention off ourselves and places it on God and all the things that have God as their source – things that are true, noble, right, pure, and lovely (Philippians 4:8). This is why it's essential to cultivate joy in our lives, even in the midst of suffering.

Finding Joy in the Simple Things

To find joy in the simple things, we must be willing to look for it. We must welcome joy rather than feel like we are betraying our depression by looking for it. Joy is not something we can manufacture or force, but it's a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). When we focus on God and His blessings, we can experience joy in everyday things like eating, drinking, working, and loving others. As the Bible says, "God richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment" (1 Timothy 6:17). By recognizing that everything good comes from God, we can take joy in the things He has blessed.

Cultivating Joy in Our Lives

Joy is not something we can use up or exhaust; it abides and grows over time as we add to what we have. We can never use joy up, and it actually increases the more we seek it. To cultivate joy, we must focus on God and His love for us. We must recognize that our true needs can be ultimately met only in and by God, and not in the fleeting relationships or experiences we may have. By changing our emotional focus and seeking joy in God, we can experience happiness that is not dependent on our circumstances. As the Bible says, "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand" (Psalm 16:11). By seeking joy in God, we can experience happiness that is lasting and fulfilling.
