I've seen this played out in my own life and in the lives of those I've counseled. Suffering can be a great apologetic for Christianity, as it reveals the hope and intimacy we have with the One who is sovereign over all things. It's not that God causes suffering, but He uses it to conform us to the likeness of His Son, to save us from eudaemonism and self-serving systems of ethics. As Paul says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Rom. 8:28). Even in the midst of suffering, we can still say, "God is good to me!"
