The Illusion of Eternal Love

The idea that love should be eternal and all-consuming is a romantic notion that can be toxic in reality. When we expect our relationships to be flawless and forever, we set ourselves up for disappointment and disillusionment. In our desire for a perfect love, we often overlook the imperfections and flaws of the other person, and we may even become disillusioned with our own selves. This illusion of eternal love can lead to a shallow and superficial understanding of love, where we are more focused on the euphoria of the newlywed phase than on building a deep and lasting connection with our partner.

The True Nature of Love

In contrast, the Bible teaches us that love is not a fleeting emotion, but a choice that we make every day. It is a choice to love and serve one another, even when it's difficult or uncomfortable. This kind of love is not based on feelings, but on a deep commitment to one another. It's a love that can weather the storms of life, and that can be sustained even in the midst of imperfection. As the Bible says, "Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away" (Song of Solomon 8:7). This kind of love is not limited to romantic relationships, but is a fundamental aspect of our relationship with God. When we enter into a relationship with God, we experience a love that is unshakeable and unwavering, a love that can never pass away.

The Impermanence of Human Relationships
