Can I Still Be Happy If I Can't Afford to Buy What I Want?

Happiness is not synonymous with wealth. In fact, wealth can work against happiness. When we focus on acquiring more possessions and income, we can never be fully satisfied. Our appetites can never be fully or finally satisfied, and this desire for more can lead to greed and a refusal to act on our compassion for those in need. (1 Cor. 6:20)

However, this doesn't mean we can't be happy if we can't afford to buy what we want. Happiness is the overflow of a healthy heart. When our heart is right with God, our attitude and feelings will follow suit. We can choose to give generously, even if we can't afford it, and God will put our money to good use. In fact, giving until we get cheerful can be a powerful way to cultivate happiness. We don't belong to ourselves; we were bought at a price, and our purpose, hope, and comfort come from knowing that.

So, can we still be happy if we can't afford to buy what we want? Yes, we can. We can focus on what's truly essential, throttle back our lifestyle, and prioritize our health and relationships. We can also choose to give generously, even if it's just 2 percent, and trust that God will bless us in return. Happiness is not about what we have or don't have; it's about the state of our heart. When our heart is right with God, we can experience true happiness, regardless of our financial circumstances. (Rom. 8:28) Our relationship with God is the key to true happiness, and it's not something that can be bought with money. (1 Tim. 6:17)
