Why did God give me this illness?
As a pastor, I've had my share of dealing with difficult questions, and the one you've asked is certainly a challenging one. Why did God give you this illness? I must say, I've seen many people struggle with this very question, and it's a question that I've grappled with myself at times. However, as I reflect on the Scriptures, I'm reminded that God works both directly and immediately, and indirectly and through means. This means that God may work through the skilled efforts of a physician, just as much as He intervenes miraculously.
It's also worth noting that many illnesses, including physical symptoms, are functional rather than organic in origin and character. This means that Jesus' healings may have been psychosomatic, meaning that they were related to the mind and emotions rather than just physical causes. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that God didn't have a hand in the healing process. In fact, the Bible teaches us that God is glorified when we have faith in Him, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
Rather than asking why God allowed the illness in the first place, I think it's more important to focus on what we can learn from it. Are we seeking to understand God's will, or are we seeking to understand God's ways? The Bible reminds us that God's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). Perhaps the illness is an opportunity for us to grow in our faith, to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, and to seek healing and restoration in Him.
