The Difficulty of Forgiveness

Forgiveness can be a challenging and unnatural process, especially when we've been hurt deeply. It's not just a matter of deciding to forgive, but also involves the willingness to confront the pain and emotions associated with the hurt. As the Bible says, "Forgiveness is the gift that leaves us jumping up and down with joy" (emphasis added). However, this joy is not always immediate, and it's common for feelings of anger and resentment to resurface, making it difficult to know if we've truly forgiven.

The Process of Forgiveness

The process of forgiveness involves several steps, including identifying who we're angry with, confessing our hurt and anger to God, and seeking forgiveness from the person who hurt us. This process can be difficult, especially if we've been hurt deeply or if the other person is unwilling to apologize or make amends. However, forgiveness is not just about the other person; it's also about our own healing and growth. As the Bible says, "The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7), and this forgiveness is available to us, no matter what we've done.

The Importance of Self-Forgiveness

Forgiving ourselves can be just as challenging as forgiving others. When we've made mistakes or hurt others, it's easy to feel guilty and ashamed. However, our identity as children of God is not based on our mistakes, but on God's forgiveness and love for us. As the Bible says, "Your new identity doesn't spring from you letting yourself off the hook. Your new identity springs from the realization that Jesus forgives you" (emphasis added). By acknowledging our mistakes and seeking forgiveness from God, we can begin to heal and move forward, not because we've earned forgiveness, but because God's forgiveness is a gift to us.
