The Role of Government

The Bible clearly defines the proper role of government in its Word. Government's primary role is to promote good and protect the righteous, while preventing evil and punishing the wicked (Romans 13:1-6). This is evident in the way a government functions as a servant of God, protecting those who do good and punishing those who do evil (Romans 13:4). By being subservient to God and His Word, a government can fulfill its purpose and bring about justice and mercy in society.

Biblical Justice vs. Social Justice

Biblical justice is grounded in the holiness of God and the righteousness that comes from Him. It emphasizes the importance of punishing the wicked and promoting good in society. On the other hand, social justice often champions movements and causes that are antithetical to a biblical worldview. While social justice may focus on promoting equality and fairness, it often neglects the importance of biblical virtues and universal Christian duties. Biblical justice, therefore, is distinct from social justice and should be the guiding principle for government and society.

Christian Responsibility for Promoting Justice

As Christians, we have a responsibility to promote justice and mercy in society. We can do this by being just and merciful, teaching God's standards, and persuading governments to make laws consistent with biblical morality. By being salt and light in society, we can bring positive moral influence on government and promote a just and merciful society. Additionally, we can work towards individual and societal reform, ordering our society and nation to bolster the purpose of God being played out in history. In doing so, we can promote a government that functions as a servant of God, protecting the righteous and punishing the wicked.
