what happens when my body gives up on me?
The Body's Decline and the Hope of Eternity
Our bodies are subject to decline and deterioration, a process that begins with the aging process and eventually leads to death. This decline is a result of the fall of humanity, as described in the Bible. Our outer nature is wasting away (2 Cor. 4:16), and our bodies are not what they were created to be. However, as Christians, we have hope in the resurrection of our bodies. Our new bodies will be free from disease, aging, and decay, and will be given fullness of strength and power (Phil. 3:21).
The Bible teaches that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). As such, they are worthy of respect and care. However, when our bodies fail us, it can be a difficult and painful experience. The Bible describes the suffering of the human body in vivid terms, including the pain of muscle spasms and the agony of heart failure (Revelation 21:4). But even in the midst of suffering, we have hope. We know that our bodies are not our ultimate reality, and that our true selves will be transformed in eternity.
In eternity, our bodies will be transformed, and we will be given new, resurrected bodies that are free from the effects of the fall. We will no longer experience pain, suffering, or death. Instead, we will live in a state of perfect health and well-being, with fullness of strength and power. This is the hope that we have as Christians, and it is a hope that gives us the strength to persevere in the midst of suffering and decline. We can trust that God is working all things together for our good, and that He will one day give us a new body that is worthy of His glory. (Romans 8:28) (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).
