Understanding Suffering and Sin

The question of why we get sick when we're getting our lives back together is a complex one. In the biblical perspective, sickness is not necessarily a direct result of sin, but it can be a consequence of a lack of spiritual alignment. The idea that all sickness is due to sin is a misconception that even some Jews of the day held (John 9:2). However, this perspective is not supported by the Bible, which teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, including sickness and health (Psalm 103:1-5). In fact, the Bible teaches that God can use sickness to bring about spiritual growth and transformation (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).

God's Sovereignty and Our Suffering

God's sovereignty over all creation, including sickness and health, is a key aspect of the biblical perspective on suffering. While it's easy to get caught up in the idea that God allows us to suffer because He doesn't love us or isn't powerful enough to prevent it, this is not a biblical understanding of God's character. Rather, God's sovereignty is a demonstration of His love and power, even in the midst of suffering. As the Bible says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This doesn't mean that our suffering is automatically good or that we should seek out suffering, but it does mean that God is working everything out for our ultimate good.

A Life of Faith and Trust

So, why do we get sick when we're getting our lives back together? It's not because God doesn't love us or isn't powerful enough to prevent it. Rather, it's often because we're not living a life of faith and trust in God. When we're living a life that's not aligned with God's will, we can expect to experience the consequences of that lifestyle. But even in the midst of suffering, God is working to bring about spiritual growth and transformation. As we learn to trust in God's sovereignty and love, we can begin to see our suffering as an opportunity for growth and deepening our relationship with Him. This doesn't mean that we won't face challenges and difficulties, but it does mean that we can face them with confidence and trust in God's goodness and power.
