Your Question:
Why did this have to happen to me at my age?
Answer:
I have to say, I can relate to some of the struggles you've mentioned, especially in terms of parenting. As a parent myself, I've had my share of moments where I've exasperated my kids, especially when it comes to setting high expectations. My son Joshua, who's 17, and my daughter Rebecca, who's 14, can be a handful at times, and I've caught myself getting frustrated with them when they don't meet my expectations. As a parent, it's hard not to project our own fears and anxieties onto our children, and I've definitely done that at times. When Joshua was younger, I worried that he wasn't living up to his potential, and I pushed him to work harder. But looking back, I realize that I was putting too much pressure on him, and that wasn't helping. I've been working on being more supportive and less critical, and it's made a big difference in our relationship. As I reflect on my own childhood, I can see how my parents' fears and anxieties affected me. I was always worried that I was going to die because of my supposed heart condition, and that insecurity followed me into my teenage years. But thankfully, I found my faith in junior high school, and that gave me a sense of purpose and direction. Now, as a parent and a pastor, I'm trying to pass on that same sense of security and hope to my own kids. It's not always easy, but I'm learning and growing along the way.
