Is patience a virtue in times of turmoil?

The Bible teaches that patience is a vital virtue, especially in times of turmoil. In the New Testament, patience is listed among the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22, and it is emphasized as a key virtue in various other passages (Rom. 8:25; 1 Cor. 13:4; Col. 1:11; 3:12; 2 Tim. 3:10; 4:2; James 5:7-8). Patience is described as an expression of submission, where we choose to move at someone else's pace rather than pressure them to match ours (1 Corinthians 13:4). This virtue is essential for building relationships and helping others toward faith, as it allows us to dwell on the fact that God is sovereign and in control, even in times of turmoil.

In times of turmoil, patience is tested, and it is essential to rely on the grace of God to develop this virtue. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 6:4, "We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself." However, despite the pressure, Paul and his companions remained patient, trusting in God's sovereignty and promises. This example teaches us that patience is not just a feeling or an emotion but a decision to trust in God's goodness and control, even in the midst of chaos.

The Bible also provides us with examples of patience in action, such as Job, who endured suffering with patience and trust in God's goodness (Job 1-2). We are also called to imitate God's patience and be slow to anger, just as He is (James 1:19). By relying on God's grace and trusting in His sovereignty, we can develop the patience needed to navigate times of turmoil and build strong relationships with others. As the apostle Peter writes, "For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges justly" (1 Peter 2:20-23). By following Jesus' example, we can learn to be patient in times of turmoil and trust in God's goodness and sovereignty.
