Can I really trust that God is working everything out for my good?

Understanding the Paradox of Trusting God

Trusting God is a paradoxical concept. On one hand, it requires us to acknowledge that we cannot trust our own thinking, our own abilities, or our own resources. We must recognize that our understanding is limited, and our strength is insufficient. This realization is a crucial step in developing genuine biblical faith. As Psalm 31:19 says, "Oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You, which You have prepared for those who trust in You in the presence of the sons of men!" (NKJV). However, trusting God also involves recognizing His sovereignty over all creation. Despite the presence of evil and suffering in the world, God remains great and all-sufficient. His plan is to bring about our greatest good, even in the midst of darkness and adversity. As Isaiah 41:10 says, "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." (NKJV). This verse offers assurance and encouragement, reminding us that God is always present and working on our behalf. We can trust in His goodness and sovereignty, even when circumstances seem uncertain or difficult.

The Call to Dependence and Surrender

Ultimately, trusting God requires us to surrender our own desires, plans, and expectations. We must acknowledge that our search for self-satisfaction has been a failure, and turn to Jesus as our true destination. This surrender is not a one-time event, but a continuous process of dependence on God. As we face challenges and difficulties, we must trust that God's way is right, even when it seems dark and uncertain. By placing our trust in Him, we can experience the peace and confidence that comes from knowing that He is working everything out for our good. As Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (NKJV). This verse reminds us that faith is the foundation of our trust in God, and that it is a substance that gives us confidence in His goodness and sovereignty.
