The Debt of Debt and Peace

Debt, whether financial, emotional, or relational, can be overwhelming and lead to feelings of anxiety and hopelessness. The Bible teaches that we can find peace despite these feelings. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." This verse reminds us that our focus should be on our relationship with God, not our debt. When we prioritize our relationship with God, we can experience peace, even in the midst of financial struggles.

The Bible also teaches that forgiveness is a key component of peace. In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus says, "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." When we forgive others, we are releasing them from the debt they owe us, and we are also releasing ourselves from the emotional burden of holding onto resentment. This freedom to forgive allows us to experience peace, even in the midst of difficult relationships.

In addition to forgiveness, the Bible teaches that our identity and worth are not defined by our debt. In Psalm 139:13-14, David writes, "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." This verse reminds us that we are loved and valued by God, regardless of our debt. When we focus on our identity in Christ, we can experience peace, even in the midst of financial struggles and emotional turmoil. By prioritizing our relationship with God, forgiving others, and focusing on our identity in Christ, we can find peace, even when we feel like we're drowning in debt.
