Why does God seem so distant when I need Him most?
Understanding God's Distance
When we feel that God is distant, it can be a confusing and disheartening experience. We may wonder if God exists or if He is even interested in our lives. However, the Bible tells us that God is rich in mercy and love (Ephesians 2:4) and that He offers everyone the opportunity to know Him. Yet, He won't force Himself on us. Instead, He promises that when we truly seek Him, we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13). It's essential to understand that God's distance is not a reflection of His love or interest in us but rather a result of our own choices and circumstances.
The Nature of God's Presence
God's presence can be both near and far at the same time. As the Bible says, "God is near you and far from you, and you do not know it" (Psalm 22:11). This paradox is rooted in the fact that God is a person, and our relationship with Him has a dimension of warmth and understanding. However, this warmth and understanding require a change of state, which often involves spiritual death and rebirth. When we are born again, we can experience God's presence in a deeper and more intimate way. This is because God has made Himself visible and tangible in and through the person of Jesus, who now lives in us through the Spirit.
Seeking God's Presence
When we feel that God is distant, it's essential to ask ourselves if we are truly seeking Him. Are we willing to put aside our own desires and expectations to seek God's presence and guidance? Sometimes, our own busyness, preoccupation, or pride can prevent us from noticing God's presence. However, God delights in us and rejoices over us (Isaiah 62:5). He wants to be close to us, but He requires us to seek Him first. When we do, we will find Him, and our lives will be transformed by His presence. As the Bible says, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you" (James 4:8). By seeking God's presence, we can experience His love, guidance, and comfort, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
