Why Do I Have to Suffer So Much When I've Done Everything Right?

Suffering is a universal human experience, and it's natural to question God's reasons for permitting it, especially when we feel like we've done everything right. The Bible acknowledges the complexity of suffering, stating that it's not always easy to discern God's reasons for permitting it (Psalm 73:16). In fact, suffering can be a mystery, and it's not always necessary for us to understand its purpose. What we can know is that God is sovereign and that His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). He knows what we don't, and His wisdom is not limited by our finite understanding.

The Purpose of Suffering

The Bible teaches that suffering is not just a result of living in a sinful, fallen world, but it can also be a means of spiritual growth and development. Jesus himself suffered immeasurably, yet He emerged stronger and more resilient (Hebrews 5:8). Similarly, the apostle Paul wrote that suffering produces perseverance, which is essential for our spiritual growth (Romans 5:3-4). When we suffer, we have a choice to make: we can let it destroy us, or we can use it as an opportunity to draw closer to God and become more like Him (1 Peter 2:21). The Bible also reminds us that suffering cannot rob us of the eternal joy that has already begun (Romans 8:28).

Finding Joy in the Midst of Suffering

While it's natural to feel overwhelmed by suffering, the Bible encourages us to find joy in the midst of it. Job, despite his unrelenting pain, took joy in the fact that he had not denied the words of the Holy One (Job 6:10). Jesus also taught that self-pity is of the devil (Matthew 16:21-23), and that we must be merciful to God's reputation. Rather than focusing on our suffering, we can choose to focus on God's sovereignty and goodness, even when we don't understand why we're suffering. By doing so, we can find peace and joy, even in the midst of pain. As the Bible says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance" (James 1:2-3).
