The Problem of Trusting Human Authorities

When we trust our doctors, financial advisors, or any other human authority, we are, in a sense, placing our faith in them. This can be a healthy and necessary aspect of life, as we often need to rely on the expertise and guidance of others to navigate complex situations. However, when we place our ultimate trust in these authorities, we may be setting ourselves up for disappointment and disillusionment.

The Limitations of Human Authority

As the passage notes, a doctor's prescription is not a guarantee of health, and a financial advisor's advice is not a guarantee of financial security. Human authorities have limitations and cannot always deliver on their promises. Moreover, when we trust in human authorities, we may be neglecting the ultimate authority, God. When we place our trust in God, we are not trusting in circumstances or human authorities, but in the sovereign power and goodness of God.

The Importance of Trusting God

In contrast to trusting human authorities, trusting God means trusting in His sovereignty and goodness, regardless of circumstances. When we pray for financial security and it doesn't come, we shouldn't blame God or question His motives. Instead, we should trust that God is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). This kind of trust is not naive or blind, but rather, it is a confident and faith-filled trust that God is ultimately in control and working for our benefit. By trusting God, we can avoid the pitfalls of trusting human authorities and experience the peace and joy that comes from knowing that we are ultimately secure in His hands.
