The Nature of Faith

Faith is often misunderstood as a rational or intellectual exercise. However, faith is a personal decision, an act of affirmation, a leap into the dark. The believer is not to be compared to the chemist, calmly, objectively, and rationally analyzing a chemical substance. Faith is not about probability or intellectual adequacy; it is about trusting in the unknown and the unseen.

In fact, doubt can work in us a trusting that we do not sink into despair. The key is to address the issues of evidence and to confront the obstacles that lead to unbelief and doubt. Faith is not about avoiding doubt, but about navigating it and finding assurance in the midst of uncertainty. As the Bible says, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).
