Discovering a New Sense of Self
The concept of a new sense of self is an intriguing one, especially from a Christian perspective. In Christianity, the idea is that we are not our own selves, but rather, we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). This means that our true identity is not found in our own self-existence, but rather in our relationship with God. The Bible teaches that we are to "deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him" (Matthew 16:24). This means that we must surrender our old self, with all its flaws and sins, and find our true self in Christ.
As we surrender to Christ, we undergo a transformation, a change of mind that results in a change of life (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is what the Greek word metanoia means. We change our mind about ourselves, realizing that we are not fundamentally good people deep down, but rather, we are sinners in need of salvation (Romans 3:23). As we submit to Christ, we find our true self in Him, and our identity is no longer defined by our own self-image, but by our relationship with God. This is a liberating truth, as it frees us from the burden of trying to be our own selves, and instead, we find our true selves in Christ.
In this new sense of self, we are no longer our own masters, but rather, we are servants of Christ (Romans 6:22). We find our purpose and meaning in life not in our own achievements or accomplishments, but in serving God and others. This is a beautiful thing, as it frees us from the obsession with self and allows us to live for something greater than ourselves. As Jesus said, "Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it" (Luke 9:24). In this new sense of self, we find true life, true freedom, and true fulfillment.
