The Nature of Selfishness and Suffering

Selfishness, in the wrong sense, refers to living for oneself at the expense of others. This view is often associated with the idea that life is about pursuing one's own desires and interests without regard for the well-being of others. However, this perspective on selfishness is not supported by Scripture. In Philippians 2:3, we are instructed to regard one another as more important than ourselves, demonstrating a humble and selfless mindset. This Christian approach to life is not about living for ourselves, but rather for God and for others.

The Problem with Selfishness

The idea that selfishness is the essence of life can lead to a conclusion that suffering or death is what really meets our selfish needs and desires. However, this argument is flawed because it redefines selfishness in an elastic way that allows for nothing to count against it. A more accurate understanding of selfishness is that it involves living for oneself at the expense of others. This understanding is supported by the biblical teaching that we should not live from selfishness or empty conceit, but rather with humility of mind.

The Christian Perspective on Suffering

From a Christian perspective, suffering is not something to be avoided at all costs. Rather, it is a part of life that can have benefits. When we suffer, we are reminded of our dependence on God and our need for Him. Furthermore, suffering can give us opportunities to care for others who are also suffering, demonstrating a selfless and compassionate spirit. In fact, Jesus Himself suffered and died on the cross, demonstrating the ultimate selflessness and compassion. As Christians, we are called to live for God and for others, not for ourselves. This means that we cannot insulate ourselves from suffering, but rather we must care for those who are suffering and refuse to give up on them. By doing so, we demonstrate a Christian response to suffering that is marked by humility, compassion, and selflessness.
