Can I Still Have a Sense of Belonging if I Cant Afford to Participate in Activities?

In many societies, the desire for belonging, self-fulfillment, and living authentically is often tied to participating in various activities, events, and social gatherings. However, what happens when financial constraints limit one's ability to participate in these activities? The answer lies in understanding that belonging is not solely defined by external factors such as possessions, income, or participation in activities. As Henri Nouwen once said, "Without solitude it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life." This implies that a sense of belonging can be found in solitude, quiet reflection, and a personal relationship with God.

The Bible teaches that our true identity and sense of belonging come from our relationship with God, not from external sources. In 1 Corinthians 6:20, it is written, "You do not belong to yourself, for you were bought at a price." This means that our worth and sense of belonging come from being purchased by God, not from our possessions or social status. Furthermore, participating in activities should not be the primary means of finding belonging, but rather a way to deepen our relationships with others and with God. By focusing on building a personal relationship with God and serving others, we can find a sense of belonging that is not dependent on external factors.

In a Christian community, there are many ways to find a sense of belonging without relying on external activities. By serving the poor, attending worship, and participating in Bible study and fellowship groups, we can come into each other's lives and find a sense of belonging. This is not about conforming to societal expectations or trying to fit in, but about living out our faith and serving others. As the Bible teaches, "You were created to do good works, which God prepared in advance for you to do" (Ephesians 2:10). By focusing on our relationship with God and serving others, we can find a sense of belonging that is rooted in our faith and not dependent on external factors.
