Is God even good?
As a Christian pastor, I firmly believe that God is indeed good. The Bible consistently affirms this truth, with Jesus himself stating, "No one is good but God alone" (Luke 18:19). The Psalms also frequently exclaim the Lord's goodness, encouraging us to "taste and see that the Lord is good" (Psalm 34:8). This understanding of God's goodness is rooted in His character, which is the ultimate standard of goodness.
God's goodness is not like human goodness, which can be fleeting and imperfect. Rather, His goodness is perfect and absolute, excluding all evil from His character. This is in line with Plato's idea that morals require absolutes, and God's character provides that foundation. As the ultimate standard of goodness, God's approval determines what is good, and His character is the reflection of this approval.
In creating creatures who are also good, God exemplifies His features of love, power, knowledge, mercy, justice, beauty, and glory to the maximal degree. This is what makes Him supremely good. As a Christian, I find comfort in this understanding of God's goodness, knowing that He is the final standard of goodness and that His character is worthy of our worship and admiration.
