The Paradox of Trust in the Medical System

When it comes to trusting the medical system, we face a paradox. On one hand, we need faith to trust our doctors' diagnoses and prescriptions. As Stanley Hauerwas writes, "It may be that the demand for euthanasia comes because we lack the skills humanely to know." We have faith that our doctors will make the right decisions, even when they're unsure. But, on the other hand, we also know that doctors can make mistakes, and their diagnoses can be wrong. The Illusion of Certainty

We recognize that our trust in the medical system is not absolute, but rather a form of faith that acknowledges its limitations. As Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick." We also recognize that our ultimate trust is not in the medical system, but in God's sovereignty and providence. As the psalmist writes, "The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O God, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands" (Psalm 138:8). By placing our trust in God, we can navigate the complexities of the medical system with greater peace and confidence.
