The Paradox of Trust

Trust is a fundamental aspect of human existence, and it's essential in various areas of life, including our relationship with the medical system. As Stanley Hauerwas writes, "Everyone lives by faith to a certain extent." When we visit a doctor, we entrust ourselves to their diagnosis and treatment, which requires faith in their expertise and intentions. However, this trust can be shaken when we encounter instances of medical error or malpractice.

The Limits of Medical Knowledge

The medical system is not infallible, and doctors can misdiagnose or struggle to explain unusual cases. Some physicians may attribute unexplained phenomena to natural causes, while others might dismiss them as miraculous. The assumption that every event has a natural explanation is not always valid, and ignoring or dismissing unexplained claims can lead to confusion and error. In these situations, it's essential to approach the matter with a discerning mind, recognizing the limitations of medical knowledge and the possibility of the miraculous.

A Christian Perspective on Trust

As Christians, we understand that trust is not solely based on human reliability but also on divine sovereignty. Jesus taught that it's the sick who need a doctor, not the healthy (Mark 2:17). This means that our trust in the medical system should not be absolute, but rather, it should be tempered with a recognition of the limitations of human knowledge and the possibility of divine intervention. Ultimately, our trust should be placed in Christ, who is the ultimate Healer and Redeemer. By putting our trust in Him, we can find peace and comfort in the midst of uncertainty and imperfection. As C.S. Lewis wrote, "We put our trust in Christ until we have first despaired of ourselves." This perspective allows us to navigate the complexities of the medical system with a sense of hope and faith.
