Why Does God Hate Lying So Much?

God hates lying so much because it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, "I am ... the truth (Jn 14:6), there is nothing false in him." When we lie, we speak according to our own nature, for we are not truth (John 8:44). Lying is not just a problem because it corrupts the social order, but because it dishonors God and diminishes his glory. As those created in God's image and created for the purpose of glorifying Him, we are called to imitate Him and be truth-tellers.

The reason lying made our top-two list is that lying breaks a fundamental rule of God's nature. God is truth, and we, as his offspring, are called to imitate Him and be truth-tellers. Lies and deception are wrong because they are against God's very nature. Satan is the liar, and his lies come to us after the seeds already exist. He is the counselor who endorses the lies we believe. When we lie, we attribute falsehood to God, which is a sin to be deplored. Hebrews 6:18 mentions two unchangeable things (God's oath and his promise) in which it is impossible for God to lie (author's translation). This emphasizes God's commitment to truth and His unchanging nature.

This is why God commands us not to lie (Lev. 19:11). It is not just a rule, but a reflection of God's nature. We are called to imitate Him and be truth-tellers.
