Is it wrong to be scared of the future?

Fear of the future is a natural human response, but is it wrong to be scared of the future from a biblical perspective? The Bible teaches that fear, like hopelessness, is reluctant to trust God for the future. God says that he will give us grace to face our fears and live with hope (Hebrews 4:16). However, when our fear is not based on trust in God, but rather on our own understanding of the future, it can lead us away from God. The Bible warns that seeking to know the future apart from God is a path to spiritual darkness (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

The Problem with Predicting the Future

The problem with predicting the future is that it assumes that future futures will resemble past futures. However, this assumption is not always true. The Bible teaches that God's sovereignty over the future is not something that we can fully understand or predict. Instead of trying to master the future, we should find enjoyment in what is at hand and live with a sense of simplicity and commitment to God. This does not mean that we should be irresponsible or hedonistic, but rather that we should trust in God's goodness and sovereignty over all things.

Trusting in God's Sovereignty

When we trust in God's sovereignty over the future, we are able to see the Spirit of God move in the details of our lives. We are able to live with hope and confidence, even in the midst of uncertainty. The Bible teaches that God's will for our lives is not something that we can fully understand, but rather something that we can trust in. When we trust in God's sovereignty, we are able to face our fears and live with hope, rather than being controlled by our fears and anxieties. Ultimately, the future belongs to God, and only he can reveal it to us. We must learn to trust in his goodness and sovereignty over all things.
