How does lying affect my relationship with God?

Lying is a significant problem that affects one's relationship with God. It denies the character of God, who is truth, and whose word embodies truth (Heb 6:18, Jn 17:17). Jesus said, "I am... the truth" (Jn 14:6), and there is nothing false in him. When we lie, we go against God's nature, and this can lead to a breakdown in our relationship with Him. Furthermore, lying can lead to a distorted view of God's character, causing us to doubt His goodness, love, and faithfulness. This can result in a sense of disconnection and distance from God.

Lying can also affect our relationship with God by leading to self-deception and unbelief. When we lie, we often do so because we believe that God is not really good or that He is holding out on us. These doubts and conflicting beliefs hide in our hearts, undercover, only apparent when we notice what we actually do rather than what we say. This can lead to a sense of mistrust and suspicion towards God, causing us to question His promises and character. Additionally, lying can make it difficult for us to experience God's presence and guidance in our lives, as our hearts become hardened by sin's deceitfulness (Heb 3:12-13).

The consequences of lying can be severe, not only in our relationships with others but also in our relationship with God. Lying dishonors God and diminishes His glory, as we, created in His image, reflect a character that is opposite to His. When we lie, we also undermine God's promises and character, making it difficult to trust Him and experience His presence in our lives. Therefore, it is essential to address lying and deception in our lives, recognizing its destructive nature and the harm it can cause to our relationship with God. By acknowledging the problem of lying and seeking to overcome it, we can restore our relationship with God and experience the truth and love that He has for us.
