Biblical Answer

A sense of hope is possible, even when dreams have been dashed or when life seems hopeless. While it is natural to feel disappointed and disillusioned when our hopes are not realized, it is not a reason to give up on hope entirely. In fact, the Bible teaches that hope is a skill that develops over time and is also a corporate venture that needs the reminders of the body of Christ (Hebrews 10:24-25). Committing oneself to a church community where the story of God's hope is told can be a powerful reminder of the hope that is available to us.

The Bible also teaches that every hope or dream of the human mind will be fulfilled if it is noble and pure (Psalm 37:4). This means that even when our hopes seem to be experiencing disappointment, it simply means that they are being purified. We can trust that God is working all things together for our good, even when we cannot see it (Romans 8:28). This is not to say that life will be easy or that we will not experience pain and suffering, but it is to say that we can have hope even in the midst of difficulty.

Ultimately, our hope is not based on our circumstances or our own abilities, but on the sovereignty and power of God. As the apostle Paul wrote, "If we have hope in this life only, we are of all men most miserable. But if we have hope that is seen, what is it? If we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it" (Romans 8:20-25). Our hope is not a feeling or a sentiment, but a confident expectation of what God has promised, and it is this hope that gives us the strength to persevere in the midst of difficulty.
