The Role of Prayer in Christian Life

Prayer is the link between the Christian and God, and it is essential to the Christian life. As emphasized in the New Testament, prayer is not just a means of getting things for ourselves, but a way to come to the throne of grace in the power of the Holy Spirit and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). Prayer is a direct personal request to God for His intervention, whether it be for healing, raising the dead, or asking for grace and strength to live our separate lives (Philippians 4:6-7). It is through prayer that we can express a fundamental trust that God will indeed answer our prayers, in spite of our acknowledgment of sin.

Prayer is not just about asking for things, but also about creating a right attitude with respect to God's will. Jesus taught his disciples to pray for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). Prayer helps us to regain the proper priorities, discern biblical wisdom, and make right judgments. Without prayer, we live as temporal people, not as those living in the light of eternity. Prayer is a means of discerning God's will, and sometimes we have to be still and listen to Him. Prayer is a relationship with God as a person, and anything in our lives that is not in harmony with God's will must be changed.

Prayer is a spiritual discipline that must be diligently exercised. It is through prayer that we can commune with God and conform ourselves to His will. Prayer is a means of expressing our unity with all that Christ stands for, and seeking to set forward Christ Himself. The purpose of prayer is the glory of God (The Gospel According to John, p. 646). Prayer is a way to regain the proper priorities, discern biblical wisdom, and make right judgments. Without prayer, we will not be able to live as those living in the light of eternity. Prayer is a means of expressing our trust in a personal God who wants us to take Him at His word. It is through prayer that we can come to know God's heart and understand His will. Prayer is not just a task, but a joy that brings us closer to God and gives us a deeper understanding of His will. Prayer is a way to live a life that is pleasing to God and to bring glory to Him.
