Your Question:

How do I get my family to support me?

Answer:

Getting your family to support you can be challenging, especially when everyone's busy with work, school, and social lives. As a pastor, I've seen many families struggle to stay connected, but I've also learned that it's possible to keep your family tight and together with some effort and commitment. It all starts with initiating planning and making time for each other.

One way to achieve this is to involve your family in serving others. As I always say to my congregation, "Whatever you do for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40). This can be as simple as volunteering at a local soup kitchen or visiting the elderly at a nursing home. My wife Susan and I have made it a point to involve our children, Joshua and Rebecca, in community service projects, and it's been a great way to bond as a family.

It's also essential to have open and honest communication with your family. As a father, I've learned to listen to my children and offer guidance without being judgmental. I remind myself that I made mistakes when I was younger, and my children will too. By being supportive and non-judgmental, I've found that my family is more likely to open up and share their thoughts and feelings with me. And when we do disagree, we make it a point to talk things through and pray together until we come to a resolution.
