The Pain of Deception and the Necessity of Trust in God

The experience of being lied to by a loved one can be devastating and lead to feelings of mistrust and betrayal. It can be challenging to know how to navigate these feelings and rebuild trust. However, as followers of Christ, we are reminded that our trust should not be placed in people, but in God. The Bible teaches us that God is the only one who is absolutely faithful and true (Hebrews 6:18). When we put our trust in Him, we can be confident that He will not lie or deceive us (Numbers 23:19). In fact, God's very nature is characterized by truth and faithfulness, and He is the only one who can be trusted completely.

The Dangers of Trusting in People

When we place our trust in people, we open ourselves up to the possibility of being hurt and deceived. As the Bible says, "All liars will have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone" (Revelation 21:8). This is because people are flawed and can fail us, just like the addict in your life may have lied to you. However, when we trust in God, we are not relying on the frailty of human relationships, but on the unshakeable character of God. This is not to say that we should not try to rebuild trust with the person who lied to us, but rather that our primary trust should be in God, who is the only one who can be trusted completely.

Finding Trust in God

So how can you trust God after being lied to by a loved one? First, recognize that God is the only one who is completely trustworthy and faithful. Second, acknowledge that your feelings of mistrust and betrayal are valid, but do not let them dictate your relationship with God. Instead, seek to understand God's character and nature, and how He is working in your life. Finally, ask God to help you to trust Him more and more, and to rely on His faithfulness and truth. As you do, you will begin to see that God is the only one who can be trusted completely, and that He is working to redeem and restore all relationships, including the one with the person who lied to you. (Psalm 138:8) Ultimately, trusting God is not about avoiding pain and suffering, but about placing our trust in the one who can overcome all obstacles and bring us into a deeper relationship with Himself. (Romans 8:28) As the Bible says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
