Can I still find joy in the little things when everything is so overwhelming?
The Beauty of Joy
Joy is not the opposite of depression, but rather a deeper experience that can coexist with it. While depression can be overwhelming, joy is a rock that stands firm, waiting to be discovered and cherished. This joy is not something we can use up or exhaust; rather, it grows and increases as we cultivate it. The Bible teaches us that God is the source of all joy, and that he richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment (1 Tim. 6:17). This means that joy is always possible, even in the midst of suffering, and that we can take joy in the things God has blessed.
Finding Joy in the Little Things
While joy may seem elusive at times, it is not something that we can find in fleeting pleasures or material possessions. In fact, the Bible warns us that the most peace, money, and leisure is also the one with the most malignant sadness (Eccles. 5:18-20). Instead, we must look for joy in the things that are true, noble, right, pure, and lovely (Phil. 4:8). This means being willing to look for joy, even when it seems difficult or impossible. We must be willing to welcome joy rather than feeling like we are betraying our depression by looking for it. By doing so, we can discover the joy that is always present, waiting to be found.
The Source of True Joy
True joy comes from God, and it is only through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that we can experience it fully. As we cultivate joy, we must also be willing to let go of our attachment to things that can lead us to the precipice of suffering. Instead, we must seek to know God and his love for us, and to appreciate the beauty of what Jesus did on the cross. By doing so, we can experience the joy that is always available to us, and that grows and increases as we add to what we have. As the Bible says, "You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness" (Ps. 30:11). May we be willing to look for joy, and to discover the joy that is always present, waiting to be found.
