The Sovereignty of God's Mercy

When considering the question of whether there is a limit to God's mercy, we must first understand that mercy is a sovereign attribute of God, optional and not necessary. The Bible teaches that God's goodness is infinite and not circumscribed by any limits, but the exercise of his goodness may be limited by himself. This means that God's mercy is not bound by any external constraints, but rather by his own will and decision.

The Optional Nature of God's Mercy

The Bible also teaches that God's mercy is made to transgressors, and it may be long or short, according to the divine will. This implies that God's mercy is not automatic or guaranteed, but rather a gift that is extended at his discretion. Just as God's omnipotence is a necessary attribute, but not necessarily exercised, so too is God's mercy. God may choose to show mercy to sinners, but he is under no necessity to do so. This is seen in the New Testament, where Jesus' death is described as the ultimate purification offering, powerful enough to cleanse all our sins (Rom. 8:3; Heb. 1:3; 13:11-12).

The Mystery of God's Mercy

The Bible teaches that we can never know for certain whether God's mercy will be extended to us, until we hear the verdict of his judgment. This means that we must approach God with humility and reverence, acknowledging that his mercy is a sovereign and optional attribute. We are to imitate God's mercy in our conduct toward others, as seen in Matthew 5:7, where Jesus teaches that the merciful will obtain mercy. Ultimately, God's mercy is a mystery that we can never fully comprehend, but we are to trust in his goodness and love, and to seek him with a humble and repentant heart. As the prophet Isaiah writes, "Who knows if God will come and give a blessing?" (Isaiah 30:18). We must always remember that God's mercy is like a rainbow, shining brightly in the clouds, but also subject to the whims of his sovereign will. (Isaiah 31:5; 35:10).
