What if I lose my sense of self?
The Paradox of Losing Oneself
The concept of losing one's sense of self is a paradoxical idea that is central to Christian teaching and experience. As Jesus said, "Whoever loses his life will lose it, and the logic of the self-assertion is he who saves his life will save it" (Matthew 16:25). In other words, when we lose ourselves in following Christ, we actually find ourselves. True self-denial is true self-discovery. This idea is also reflected in the biblical pattern of giving up one's life for others, as seen in the example of Jesus who gave up his life for the sake of humanity (John 15:13).
The Importance of Self-Denial
Self-denial is not about becoming a non-entity or losing one's identity, but rather about surrendering one's ego and pride to God. When we deny ourselves, we are not trying to eliminate our sense of self, but rather to become more aware of God's presence and guidance in our lives. As the Bible says, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23). This means that we must be willing to let go of our own desires and ambitions and instead seek to follow God's will for our lives.
The Result of Self-Denial
When we lose ourselves in following Christ, we find ourselves in a new and deeper way. We become more aware of our own weaknesses and flaws, and we are more willing to surrender them to God. As the Bible says, "For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit" (Romans 8:5). When we surrender ourselves to God, we are no longer controlled by our own desires and ambitions, but are instead guided by the Holy Spirit. This leads to a deeper sense of self-awareness and understanding of our place in the world. We become more aware of our own limitations and weaknesses, and we are more willing to seek God's guidance and wisdom in all aspects of our lives. Ultimately, losing ourselves in following Christ leads to a deeper sense of self and a more fulfilling life.
