Understanding Righteous Jealousy

Righteous jealousy is a fundamental attribute of God's nature, as described in the Bible. It is not an emotion like love or hate, but rather an activity that reflects God's concern for His own honor. God's jealousy is a desire to protect His own name, will, and government. This is evident in passages such as Exodus 34:14, where God says, "For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God." God's jealousy is not a compound of frustration, envy, and spite, but rather a righteous indignation that seeks to uphold His holiness.

Contrasting Human and Divine Jealousy

Human jealousy, on the other hand, is often rooted in pride, envy, and a desire for what others have. This type of jealousy is destructive and can lead to harm in relationships. In contrast, God's jealousy is holy and seeks to protect His own honor. The Bible warns against human jealousy, which is often accompanied by envy and a desire for what others have (Proverbs 27:4). In contrast, God rejoices in the good that comes to others (Romans 12:15). The jealousy of God is not a grudge held against humanity, but rather a desire to uphold His own holiness.

Recognizing and Ridding Ourselves of Jealousy

To understand and appreciate God's jealousy, we must first recognize the jealousy that resides within us. Often, we are unaware of the jealousy we hold against God, and instead focus on our dissatisfaction with what others have or do. To rid ourselves of jealousy, we must focus on our relationship with God and recognize that He is our Creator, who owes us nothing. By acknowledging our jealousy and redirecting our focus towards God, we can begin to understand and appreciate His righteous jealousy. This, in turn, can lead to a deeper appreciation for God's holiness and a desire to uphold His name, will, and government.
