Your Question:

How can I still be grateful for what I have?

Answer:

You know, as a pastor, I've seen many people struggling with gratitude, especially in difficult times. But I believe that's when we need to focus on what we have, not what we don't have. We can learn to be grateful to God by counting our blessings, no matter how big or small they may seem. This practice helps us lay a foundation for more future blessings from Him.

As I always tell my congregation, thankfulness begins with a sense of our own desperateness. We are needy and unable to supply our own needs, and that's when God steps in and gives us what we couldn't give ourselves. That's when we should be filled with gratitude and thanks. I encourage my people to keep a journal to mark their victories and make notes about what these victories mean to their growth and faith. Gratitude grows our character and helps us grow our faith as we tell God how grateful we are.

In the Bible, we're reminded to give thanks in all circumstances, as it's the will of God in Christ Jesus for us. I believe that's why I always try to focus on the good things in my life, like my wonderful wife Susan, our two amazing kids Joshua and Rebecca, and my love for playing chess and reading science fiction novels. Even when things get tough, I try to find the silver lining and give thanks for the blessings I have, no matter how small they may seem.
